Assessment & Internal Examination
As part of a pelvic health physiotherapy assessment, Susie will always begin by talking through your symptoms, concerns, and goals. You will be asked to complete some online forms prior to the appointment and will be asked about your current symptoms.
In many cases, a pelvic health assessment may involve an internal examination. This will always be discussed with you first, and your consent will be gained at every stage.
An internal examination allows assessment of:
-
how strong your pelvic floor muscles are
-
how well they can sustain a contraction
-
how effectively they can relax
-
how well the pelvic floor works with your breathing and core muscles
Many women are unsure if they are “doing their pelvic floor exercises correctly”.
An internal assessment allows us to understand how well you’re able to connect with these muscles - and whether they’re working efficiently, overworking, or struggling to relax.
Not All Symptoms Are About Weakness
Pelvic floor symptoms related to bladder and bowel function are not always caused by weakness.
Some symptoms are related to:
-
overactivity or tension
-
poor coordination
-
difficulty relaxing
-
or the way the pelvic floor works with breathing and movement
This is why pelvic health physiotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
A Personalised Plan
By assessing how your pelvic floor, core muscles, and breathing work together, we can create:
-
a personalised exercise programme
-
practical management strategies
-
guidance that fits your symptoms, lifestyle, and goals
The aim is to help your system work more effectively — supporting both strength and relaxation where needed.
Your Comfort Comes First
An internal examination is never carried out without explanation, consent, and your comfort at the centre of the session.
If you have questions or concerns, these can always be discussed before deciding how to proceed.
