Pelvic Health & Core Rehabilitation

Pelvic health issues are common — but they’re often misunderstood, minimised, or simply not talked about.

Pelvic health and core rehabilitation physiotherapy offers specialist, evidence-based support to help you understand what’s happening in your body, improve function, and feel more confident in movement and everyday life.

This is clinical, one-to-one physiotherapy care, delivered in a respectful and supportive environment.

Pelvic health symptoms rarely exist in isolation.
The pelvic floor works closely with your abdominal muscles (core), breathing, posture, and the way you move day to day.

When someone experiences bladder, bowel, prolapse symptoms, or pelvic pain, it’s important to look at how the whole system is working together, rather than focusing on one muscle group alone.

What Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Can Help With

Pelvic health and core rehabilitation may support you if you’re experiencing:

  • bladder or bowel changes (leaking, urgency, difficulty emptying)

  • prolapse symptoms (heaviness, dragging, pressure)

  • pelvic pain or discomfort

  • pain during movement, exercise, or daily activities

  • core weakness or diastasis recti (the tummy gap)

  • difficulty returning to exercise

  • reduced confidence in your body

Symptoms may be related to pregnancy, postnatal recovery, menopause, surgery, or changes over time - and every assessment is individual.

What to Expect From an Appointment

Assessment & Internal Examination

As part of a pelvic health physiotherapy assessment, Susie will always begin by talking through your symptoms, concerns, and goals. You will be asked to complete some online forms prior to the appointment and will be asked about your current symptoms.

In many cases, a pelvic health assessment may involve an internal examination. This will always be discussed with you first, and your consent will be gained at every stage.

An internal examination allows assessment of:

  • how strong your pelvic floor muscles are

  • how well they can sustain a contraction

  • how effectively they can relax

  • how well the pelvic floor works with your breathing and core muscles

Many women are unsure if they are  “doing their pelvic floor exercises correctly”.

An internal assessment allows us to understand how well you’re able to connect with these muscles -  and whether they’re working efficiently, overworking, or struggling to relax.

Not All Symptoms Are About Weakness

Pelvic floor symptoms related to bladder and bowel function are not always caused by weakness.

Some symptoms are related to:

  • overactivity or tension

  • poor coordination

  • difficulty relaxing

  • or the way the pelvic floor works with breathing and movement

This is why pelvic health physiotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

A Personalised Plan

By assessing how your pelvic floor, core muscles, and breathing work together, we can create:

  • a personalised exercise programme

  • practical management strategies

  • guidance that fits your symptoms, lifestyle, and goals

The aim is to help your system work more effectively — supporting both strength and relaxation where needed.

Your Comfort Comes First

An internal examination is never carried out without explanation, consent, and your comfort at the centre of the session.

If you have questions or concerns, these can always be discussed before deciding how to proceed.

Pelvic health physiotherapy appointments are:

  • one-to-one and private

  • evidence-based and clinically focused

  • respectful, calm, and supportive

  • tailored to your symptoms, goals, and comfort

We’ll take time to talk through your concerns, assess what’s happening physically (with consent at every stage), and agree on a plan that feels manageable and appropriate for you.

What Is Core Rehabilitation?

Core rehabilitation looks at how your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, breathing, posture, and movement patterns work together as a system.

This is where I often use Pilates-based rehabilitation principles to support recovery. Rather than focusing on strength alone, the aim is to improve coordination, control, and connection between the abdominal wall, pelvic floor, and breathing.

For many women, symptoms are not simply about weakness. They may relate to:

  • poor coordination

  • overactivity or tension

  • difficulty relaxing

  • or the system not working well together during movement

Using Pilates principles allows us to gently retrain how these muscles work together helping them both activate when needed and relax when appropriate.

Core rehabilitation often forms part of pelvic health physiotherapy, particularly for women experiencing bladder or bowel symptoms, pain, post-surgical recovery needs, or changes through menopause.

The focus is always on function and confidence in everyday movement, not on exercise for exercise’s sake.
