Post-Surgical Pelvic Health Rehabilitation Â
Support After Pelvic or Abdominal Surgery
Recovery after surgery is not just about healing tissue — it’s about helping your body feel safe, coordinated, and confident again.
Post-surgical pelvic health physiotherapy offers specialist, one-to-one support following gynaecological or abdominal surgery, helping you recover well and reduce the risk of ongoing symptoms.
Whether surgery was recent or many months ago, physiotherapy can support you in understanding what’s happening in your body and moving forward with confidence.
Â
Surgery We Commonly Support
Post-surgical pelvic health rehabilitation may be helpful following:
-
hysterectomy
-
prolapse surgery
-
caesarean section
-
abdominal or pelvic surgery
-
gynaecological procedures
-
surgery related to pelvic pain or dysfunction
Support is individual and tailored to your surgery, symptoms, and stage of recovery.
Â
Common Post-Surgical Symptoms
After pelvic or abdominal surgery, it’s common to experience:
- pelvic floor or core weakness
- bladder or bowel changes
- pelvic discomfort or pain
- abdominal tightness or reduced movement
- scar sensitivity or restriction
- fear or uncertainty around movement and exercise
- reduced confidence in your body
These symptoms don’t mean something has gone wrong — they’re often part of how the body adapts after surgery.
Assessment & Pelvic Health Considerations
Â
Pelvic health symptoms after surgery often involve more than one area.
The pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, breathing, posture, and movement patterns all work together as a system. Surgery can temporarily disrupt how this system functions.
As part of your assessment, we’ll talk through your surgery, recovery so far, and any symptoms or concerns you’re experiencing.
Where appropriate, and with your consent, assessment may include an internal pelvic floor examination to understand:
-
how well the pelvic floor muscles are working
-
how they coordinate with breathing and the abdominal wall
-
whether they can activate and relax effectively
This helps ensure rehabilitation is specific to you, rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
Rehabilitation Using Pilates-Based Principles
Post-surgical rehabilitation often involves using Pilates-based rehabilitation principles to support recovery.
Rather than focusing on strength alone, the aim is to:
-
improve coordination between the pelvic floor, core, and breathing
-
restore control and confidence in movement
-
support both activation and relaxation of muscles
-
rebuild trust in your body gradually
This approach supports functional movement helping you feel more confident with daily activities, exercise, and returning to what matters to you.
